Amazon Robotics has expanded its Proteus autonomous mobile robot fleet into additional North American fulfillment centers, moving the platform from earlier pilots into broader operational use. Proteus is built to carry heavy and bulky inventory, commonly cited at loads of around 300 pounds, and to travel dynamically through warehouse aisles rather than following fixed conveyor paths. The expansion is framed as part of a larger effort to automate handling of the heaviest portion of SKUs, reducing repetitive lifting and lowering injury risk while keeping human associates focused on exception handling, quality control, and inventory decisions.

Unlike tape-guided AGVs, Proteus uses onboard sensing to navigate mixed-traffic floors, lift carts or loads, and deliver them toward packing or staging points with limited facility reconstruction. The company has previously positioned Proteus as a companion to other in-house systems such as tote-handling and picking robots, and recent reporting notes that later generations add more flexible tasking, including conversational or natural-language direction in some deployments. Operational claims around the latest scale-up include wider site coverage, better integration with existing inventory systems, and early safety gains from taking strain off workers.

For operators outside Amazon, the news matters because it shows AMR fleets moving from novelty into core infrastructure for heavy-goods movement, a segment that conventional parcel AMRs often leave untouched. The same pattern is expected to influence 3PLs and regional e-commerce networks that face similar labor and ergonomic constraints. Integration remains the practical bottleneck: robots only create value if WMS or WES layers can assign missions, avoid congestion, and interleave putaway with outbound work.

Proteus scaling therefore sits at the intersection of mobile robotics, heavy-load handling, and software orchestration rather than being a standalone hardware story.
